The water level of the Jhelum river suddenly increased in Pakistan on Saturday afternoon in Pakistan -occupied Kashmir (POK), causing floods in many areas. The authorities then issued an alert asking the local people to go to safe places.
According to reports, the administration has announced water emergency in Hattian Bala area. At the same time, warnings are also being issued from mosques.
Mudassar Farooq, deputy commissioner of the capital Muzaffarabad, has asked the local residents to avoid going to the Jhelum river nearby. He described the release of more water in Jhelum as a deliberate step by India.
Warning of people to stay away from river
Deputy Commissioner Farooq said that India has released more water than normal in the Jhelum River, due to which there has been flood. There is no such thing as panic right now. Nevertheless, we have appealed people not to stay away from the river area and not take animals there.
At the same time, the director of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said that he had not received any prior warning in this matter. He further explained that it will take time for water to reach Mangala Dam. Currently, security measures have already been implemented in the lower areas.
Earlier India used to give information about release of water
According to reports, 22,000 cubic feet of water is flowing every second in Jhelum in Muzaffarabad. This has increased concern among people living in areas like Gari Dupatta, Majhoi and Muzaffarabad.
According to Pakistani media reports, under the Indus Water Treaty, India used to inform Pakistan in cases of release or stopping water in Jhelum, Chenab and Indus rivers. But this time no information was given by India.
No reports of any damage from the floods have been received yet. India has also not made any statement about releasing more water in Jhelum.

Indus Water Agreement was held in 1960, stopped after 65 years
In 1960, the agreement was reached between Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan President Ayub Khan. In the agreement, 6 rivers flowing from the Indus basin were divided into the eastern and western parts.
India has full authority over the water of Ravi, Beas and Sutlej. India can stop India’s 20% water of Indus, Chenab and Jhelum rivers in the western part.
At the same time, Pakistan has described the end of the Indus Water Treaty as the Act of War. The Pakistani government said- If India stops the Indus Water Agreement, it will be considered as the Act of War.
