‘Tumbad’ fame actor Soham Shah’s film Crazxy has been released. He is seen in a new avatar in the film. The film is directed by Girish Kohli. Girish is making his directorial debut with the film ‘Crazy’. Prior to this, he has written films like ‘Mom’ and ‘Kesari’. The producer of the film is Soham Shah. ‘Crazy’ is getting good response from fans.
Girish Kohli has shared the journey of his first film as a director with Dainik Bhaskar. Read the major parts of the conversation…
Question- It took a long time to write and make the film. What were the challenges?
Answer- I wrote the film eight years ago. In the year 2022, I started shooting for the film. The last segment of the film was shot in 2024. So it took time not to write a film. The biggest challenge for me was to keep the story alive inside me for a long time. Do not let Passion cool down, do not let the story weaken. The unit is so big, so many people are connected, there are many departments, then it is the responsibility of a director, everyone on the set should make the same picture together. There are small fights from which we have to fight.
Soham Shah is also the producer of this film.
As an artist, I have a challenge for me how to remove ‘I’ from my art. What do I want or avoid imposing my choice. What is necessary for the film, what is the demand for the story. Working continuously on all these becomes a challenge. It was challenging to stay on his decision. Never felt that it was taking time, so I leave it.
If you look from outside, this is a road film. Shooting above the road is very challenging. We have not shot in the studio. There is no VFX shoot. We took the bus on the road with the bus. India has visited. Shooting on a lot of roads of the country. We did not shoot this film in Mumbai. The landscape and texture for the film could not be found on the streets of Mumbai. We had girls in our crew, they were challenging to shoot on the road like this. But he has shown a lot of courage.
Question- Would you like to say something about the decision not to change adulteration or change in your film?
Answer- I do not see it as adulteration. Everyone has their own perspective and they put it in front. Producers are also very fast and responsible people. They keep their views on their behalf, which they feel will be better. Then the vision and convision of the director is useful at this place. Then he tells what will be better for this film.
In front of me, some things were kept by the producer but nothing was without reason. There were questions from their side whether we could do this? I had picked this story at one place before Soham Shah Production but perhaps he did not understand the story. I do not even take this point negatively.
Question- You have mastered writing. Many big projects are your names. Why did you choose this film as a director debut?
Answer- I did not choose. The film chooses you. I just do my work and keep writing. I am very passionate and honest about my every story. But you should find someone whose vibe matches you.
Akira Kurosawa was a Japanese filmmaker. He said in an interview that a writer-director or any creator should have a lot of stories. When you get a chance to sit in front of the producer, tell them your story. If they do not like, do not get up disappointed, tell them another story.
I find this very right for them. I believe that you keep doing your work, when you find a story unique, write it.
Question- Has Akira Kurosava spoke to you?
Answer- Yes, of course. This has happened with my Soham. I wrote a story 10 years ago. I think this is one of my strongest stories. I picked her up near Soham. Soham also liked him very good and we both wanted us to make him. But the stage on which his production house was on, Soham could not become the stage as an actor.
Then Soham said that do not make this and try something else? We both wanted to work with each other. We started exploring together. In such a situation, the story of ‘Crazy’ came out.
Question- You have recreated the songs of the films ‘Satya’ and ‘Inquilab’. Where did its idea come from?
Answer- See, Kallu Mama song was always in the script. I think it is very easy to write for the writer. But it takes creativity to recreate the earlier song according to the situation. The song in the recreation should not look plug in play or retrofitted. Overall, the forced should not appear.
The song ‘Satya’ was going very right with the situation of my film ‘Goli Mare Se Bhee’. The character of the film is stuck in over thinking. If he listens to the brain, he will die, if he does not listen, he will die. This is the story of the film.
However, this is also a kind of risk. This is a Cult song made by Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar ji. For the dignity to recreate this song, you should either be a stupid or crazy. But my composition was that I am doing it right. When an actor, producer, unit your team also feels right, then a validation is found. It is not easy to recreate songs. Production support is required in this. There is a case of legal issue and rights. There are a lot of money.
Abhimanyu and Chakravyuh’s metafer was always in the film. The character was named Abhimanyu Sood. I am a big fan of Mahabharata. It seems to me the biggest story of India. My film ‘Mom’ also has a reference to Mahabharata. The second song which is ‘trapped in Abhimanyu Chakravyuh, Tu’ This is not my idea. Nor will it be mentioned in the script. The film was later included. And that too was the idea of my producer.
The music of my film is given by Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar ji. We had great composer, so my idea was that we do something.
Question- Have you and Soham have been able to protect yourself from the dazzle of Mayanagari?
Answer- I believe that Chakravyuh is never going to end in life. The industry will not get caught in anything else. It is your responsibility, so fight the swag. If you gave the difference and left the Chakravyuh, then people would say what was the stud. If you could not distinguish, then people would say what was stupid. Why did it go? People will continue to say something.
Fearing the film industry, you will go out and get Chakravyuh elsewhere. All this is never going to end. Where it is a matter of dazzling, it is just a noise. The reality is what you will show to the audience in 90 minutes.
Question- Can it be said that this film has a deadly combination of crazy actor and crazy director?
Answer- Absolutely can be said. Soham Shah is a crazy actor. They do not have to prove anything now. Soham has proved his crazyness from his films. You have realized some things of the film, which we were hiding. So you should think for yourself that such madness is required only a crazy actor and a crazy director.
Question- In the end, tell me what has been the most emotional or difficult in your journey of this film?
Answer- This is my first picture. There are many emotional moments for me. I say the first love, the first actor, the first film will all be special. I have done a lot of work as a writer but is my first film as a director. This entire experience is emotional. I have learned a lot about life from this film, about myself, film making.
There was an episode, which was very difficult. I can say with the claim that when you watch the film, you will understand that I was talking about this scene. That scene is the item number of my film. We have done an item number by writing, acting and performing in a creative way in the film. There was a lot of concern about that scene. But it happened that the scene became the first scene of my first film, which was shot. And that was the most difficult scene.
That scene is a bit tall, so it took him three to four days to shoot. On the third or fourth day I do not remember well, Soham gave a long 10 -minute tall. Soham gave amazing performance. I have worked with good actors like Sridevi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Rishi Kapoor. But I kept watching Soham’s performance.
I could not understand what was going on in front of me. I cried that day. My happiness was coming out that someone has given his best for my film. So he will be very emotional for me and I will also remember.
