The work of cleaning the Yamuna in Delhi started on Monday. The BJP made it a big issue in the recent election. Three years have been fixed for cleaning the river. LG VK Saxena gave instructions for cleaning after a meeting with the Chief Secretary.
According to the LG office, the cleanliness of Yamuna will be in four stages. In the first phase, garbage and silt will be removed from the river. Along with this, there will be cleanliness of Najafgarh drain, supplementary drain and other large drains. Apart from this, sewage treatment plants (STPS) will be monitored.
New treatment plants will be set up to meet 400 MGD (Day on Million Gallons) sewage treatment. The Jal Board, Municipal Corporation, Environment Department and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will work together to meet the target.

Yamuna cleaning work started in 2023 Earlier, the work of cleaning the Yamuna started in January 2023. For this, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) formed a committee under the leadership of LG. But the AAP government went to the Supreme Court with the NGT decision. After this cleaning was stopped.
The AAP government said that LG cannot be empowered outside its region. This order of NGT also violates the order of the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court besides the constitutional scheme of the government in Delhi.
The Delhi government had appealed that this decision of NGT should be banned. On this, the court had said that there will be a stay to the extent where LG has been made the head by NGT. We cannot stop this entire order.
