Tihar’s 1 to 9 jail has a capacity to keep about 5 thousand prisoners, but currently there are 12 thousand+ prisoners.
BJP’s Delhi government is planning to shift Tihar Jail out of the city. On March 25, CM Rekha Gupta presented a budget of ₹ 1 lakh crore for Delhi for 2025-26, asked to shift to Tihar.
He said- It is planned to shift it outside the city to reduce the crowd of prisoners at the existing Tihar campus. This will also benefit the prisoners. For its survey and advisory, ₹ 10 crore has been kept separately in the budget of 2025-26.
According to the source associated with Tihar- We had also asked for a place in Bapraula, but we could not find that due to encroachment. However, we have written to the Delhi government to provide 100 acres of land elsewhere. It is also proposed to increase Tihar a two -storey.
According to the source, this will make Tihar’s prisoner capacity 3 times. Also, there will be enough space for prisoners to stay for five-ten years. The source said that the jail number 1 to 9 was designed to keep about 5,000 prisoners, but currently there are 12 thousand+ prisoners.
The jail number 10-16 was built for about 3700 prisoners, but currently there are more than 3900 prisoners. Jail number 4 in Tahar and 12 in Mandoli Jail are known as Mulaija Jail, which means the first crime. We have a large number of prisoners in both these jails.

Formation of society for improvement and rehabilitation of prisoners
CM Rekha also announced the formation of Delhi Jail under one society in the budget. Which will pay attention to the improvement and rehabilitation of prisoners. The prisoners will prepare to work in different industries inside the jail. Delhi government offices, ministry and departments will also give priority in the purchase of products manufactured in Tihar, Rohini and Mandoli jail premises.
At the same time, on the condition of anonymity, an official said that the consumption of the products made by the prisoners is usually in Tihar Jail. They are also sold through some shops, which are known as Tihar Haat. The earnings from these shops are very low.
The official said that this decision of the government will earn more prisoners. Prisoners make many types of products daily. Prisoners are paid for their production. If the products made in Tihar Jail are purchased by different agencies, it will be very beneficial for them.
