Our Street Food Tour Experience In Cebu City

Cebu Philippines Food Tour

Prior to leaving our home in 🍁 Canada, I always research and 👀 read reviews, before choosing who to select for our outings.

When I Googled “Food Tour in Cebu”, Backstreet Academy popped up on page one. After reading positive reviews from others, it was an easy decision to make.

It turned out to be an excellent one, as well!

After arranging and booking our tour prior to our arrival in the City, we were met at our 🏨 hotel, by our friendly local guide and host – Vincent. He was born and raised in Cebu and was eager to show us some of the local dishes he was raised on,

living in the Philippines.

We hopped in a 🚕 taxi and followed his lead on his 🏍 motorbike, to our first destination, to begin the tour.

It was lunch time, so we were ready to sample some of the local cuisine.

All prepared by street vendors and local eateries, in the older part of Cebu City.

Below, is just a sample of what you can expect to try, when taking part in this; very unique food experience and what we enjoyed, on our tour.

This certainly gives you an opportunity to sample some extraordinary and very unfamiliar dishes, unlike that of what we eat at home, in North America!

Local Street Food Vendors And Eateries

Taking this tour, also gives you a chance to get up close and personal with the locals. To truly experience their daily way of life in Old Cebu, first hand.

Our excursion took place in Old Cebu, where many old buildings and residences are situated. There’s local shopping, restaurants, housing and much more in the surrounding area.

Entering a small corridor market area, our guide (Vincent) introduced us to a few; tasty fruits, to tantalize our taste buds, for what’s about to come!

It was then on to a popular food stall that serves – ginabot.

This is pork intestines that are deep fried and served with corn rice and soup. Corn rice is a cheaper substitute to rice, and is very popular among locals.

We have traveled to Vietnam and Thailand in past years, but this was the first time, trying pork intestines.

A little chewy, but not bad at all deep fried!

Next up, how about some barbequed chicken feet?

Yup, had to try it!

There’s not much meat, but I learned from the locals, that’s it quite good for your; cartilage in your knees.

We also sampled barbequed chicken liver!

It was ok to try, but I’m not a big fan of liver. 🙁

We then 🚶 walked to a small, but very popular eatery serving; pork siomai. These small dumplings were absolutely delicious!

Like eating candy once you start, it’s hard to stop.

Siomai is a local favorite and for very good reason, they are amazing!

We then made our way to another popular street food vendor preparing; nilarang. This is a very tasty 🐟 fish soup with a variety of spices.

Definitely one of our other favorites on the tour!

The soup base and 🐟 fish was very tasty!

At this point, we were definitely getting full, but were told by Vincent, more to come!

Vincent then led us to a small side street vendor, who was preparing a local snack favorite, known as; puso (rice) dipped into; tuslob buwa, (bubbling sauteed pig’s brain).

Yup again, you heard that right, 🐷 pig’s brain!

Although extremely boiling hot, it was actually quite tasty and another first for me, in foreign food sampling!

To finish up our walking food tour, we made our way to two very popular eateries.

The first serving Turon or caramelized 🍌 bananas, which were great.

As well, Vincent insisted we just had to try … Halo-halo.

Turon Street Vendor

Halo-halo is a very popular cold dessert favorite among locals.

It’s a mixture of crushed ice, evaporated milk and a variety of food items thrown in such as; ube, sweetened beans, corn, coconut julienes, sago, gulaman, pinipig rice, boiled root crops in cubes, fruit slices, flan.

The ingredients are all mixed in together, with ice cream.

Quite a mixture, but a very tasty and surprisingly sweet snack!

Halo-halo Treat

Because of the size of the halo-halo dessert and the fact that we were beyond full, we insisted, that we all share just one and it was plenty!

If that wasn’t enough, we had to wash down everything with fresh 🥥 coconut milk! 🙂

This was a superb food tour experience. It’s an ideal tour, if you wish to sample some of the countries local and favorite dishes.

It’s a unique experience and completely out of the ordinary. A chance to step out of the box, to observe and interact with the locals, as they go about their daily lives in Cebu City.

Our tour guide and host Vincent was excellent, informative and a lot of fun to be with!

Of course, trying all these different foods and vendors during our tour, naturally we were concerned about food safety.

Vincent ensured they only use trusted vendors and eateries, on their tours.

We experienced no illness afterwards whatsoever!
