The All India Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) started the ‘Waqf Rescue Campaign’ from 11 April in protest against the new Waqf Act for the next 87 days. AIMPLB had said that the campaign would be done peacefully, but it did not happen.

The situation deteriorated in Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas and Malda in West Bengal. Jangipur and Suti areas of Murshidabad took place on a large scale between 12 to 1 pm on Friday afternoon. The protesters set fire to government buses and vehicles on NH-12, threw stones at the police.

The police chased the protesters, tears non -shells on them. 10 policemen were injured in the attack. During the protest, the news of the death of 3 people also came, but could not be confirmed. The National Highway, Rail Traffic was stopped due to the demonstration. Also, internet was also discontinued in uproar areas.

BSF was helped to control the located. The situation became normal after 12 hours passed. Traffic on rail and road was started. Although the internet has been closed.

Apart from Murshidabad, a Muslim mob, who was demonstrating at the Amatla intersection of Diamond Harbor, vandalized a police vehicle in broad daylight. Western Railway had reported that a crowd of around 5000 people blocked the track near Dhulianganga station at 2.46 pm in Azimganj-New Farakka section.

Governor CV Anand Bose spoke to Shah

The state governor CV Anand Bose discussed the violence in West Bengal with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Apart from this, Bose directed the state government to take action against the miscreants responsible for the nuisance in the sensitive areas of Murshidabad, Malda and South 24 Parganas districts.

According to the board, the movement will run until the bill is completely canceled. It has been named ‘Waqf Save, Save the Constitution’ campaign, as the board connects it with constitutional rights.

AIMPLB has talked about making it a broad mass movement like Shah Bano case (1985), which will spread from cities to villages. The women’s wing of AIMPLB will make women aware by organizing programs at different places. The board has appealed to the community to exercise restraint and avoid emotional reactions.

Programs to be held under Waqf rescue operation

  • 22 April: A big event will be organized at Delhi’s Talkatora Stadium named ‘Tahfuz-e-Aaucaf Caravan’ (Hifazat of Waqf).
  • 30 April: At 9 pm, people across the country will close the lights for half an hour in their homes, offices, and factories and will protest through ‘blackout’.
  • 7 May: Another big program at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi.

What is the personal law board to do

  • Protests by creating a human chain (human chain) after the prayers of Jumme. Strike at the capitals and district headquarters of all states, symbolic arrests, plan to submit a memorandum to the President-Home Minister.

AIMPLB objections regarding Waqf law

  • Capture of Waqf properties: The board claims that the bill will make Waqf properties easy for government or individuals.
  • Reduction in autonomy: Opposition to include non-Muslim members in the Waqf Board and the right to assess assets to district collectors in the new law.
  • Violation of religious freedom: AIMPLB says that this bill violates the right to religious freedom under the Constitution, as it does not treat Hindu and Sikh religious institutions equally.
  • Improper intervention: The board believes that it is not acceptable to reduce the powers of Waqf boards and increase government control.

All India Woman Muslim Personal Law Board in support of law

Some Muslim organizations such as All India Woman Muslim Personal Law Board have supported the bill. His president Shaista Ambar says that it is in the interest of poor Muslims, especially women, and will remove illegal occupations on Waqf properties. However, AIMPLB and other organizations consider it against the Muslim community.

17 petitions filed in Supreme Court, 10 listed

17 petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court to challenge the constitutionality of the new Waqf law. Of these, 10 petitions have been listed for hearing. The 3 -member bench of CJI Sanjeev Khanna will hear them on 16 April. Those who filed the petition include political party, leaders, MPs, private and organization (NGOs).

Sarwar Chishti, secretary of Anjuman Committee at Ajmer Dargah, described the Act as an attempt to grab Muslim Waqf properties under the guise of law. Chishti said- Waqf properties are not political property, they are holy trusts, our ancestors have donations given 700–800 years ago. This amendment is nothing short of state sponsored land grab.

He accused the Modi government, BJP and right -wing groups of running a broad agenda to marginalize Muslims across the country. A body of 28 Muslim organizations also announced a social boycott of the community in Rajasthan who have publicly supported the law.

The Waqf Amendment Bill (now Law) passed on April 2 after a discussion of 12-12 hours in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on 3 April. After this, President Draupadi Murmu approved the bill late on 5 April. The government has issued a gazette notification regarding the new law. The central government will issue separate notifications regarding the date of implementation of the law.

During the discussion on the bill, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju had said- The purpose of the law is to prevent bias, misuse and encroachment in Waqf properties. The bill was supported by 128 members in the Rajya Sabha, 95 protested. This bill was passed in the midnight of 2 April in the Lok Sabha. During this period, 288 MPs voted in support and 232 in protest.
