Varicella-Zoster Virus: Most of us do not know that a virus can be hidden in our body, which can take a dangerous form with aging. A virus called Varicella-Zzoster, which once caused chickenpox in childhood, is now present in our body in a passive state.
This is the same virus that causes chickenpox in childhood. The virus remains deactivated in the nervous system, but it can become active again when aging and the immune system is weak and can cause a disease called shingles.
Symptoms and potential danger of shingles
A person suffering from shingles may have skin rash and blisters. In addition, there may be long -term effects such as sharp irritation, tingling, and post hepatic neurasia (PHN). In some cases, this virus can spread to the eyes, which can lead to eyesight. Along with this, people suffering from shingles are also more at risk of heart attack and stroke.
Lack of awareness among Indians
A survey conducted by GSK revealed that this virus is present in 90 percent of Indians aged 50 and above, but 56.6 percent people have no information about it. Apart from this, 61 percent of Indians are already struggling with diseases like diabetes, heart disease, asthma, and kidney disease, but only 49.8 percent people are worried about shingles.
How to protect against shingles?
Preventive healthcare should be given priority to avoid shingles. Experts believe that this disease can be avoided by adopting regular body test and right lifestyle. For this, people over 50 years of age are advised to take shingles vaccine.
Confidence maintained despite aging
Although awareness about shingles is low, but an interesting thing in the survey also revealed that 55.7 percent of Indians feel less than their age. 24 percent people believe that they feel at least 10 years younger. However, only 25 percent of Indians take any step to prevent diseases.
