The Trump administration in the US has decided to exclude Reuters, Bloomberg and AP News Agency from the White House Press Pool. The White House said on 15 April that these news agency will no longer get a permanent place in the press pool.
The press pool is a small group, which consists of about 10 media institutions. Press pools cover every activity of the US President. Whether it is a meeting in the Oval Office, there are questions and answers in the Air Force One, or the country and abroad.
White House changed 111 year old tradition
The responsibility of deciding which media houses will be in the press pool were with the White House Repulsions Association (WHCA). It is an independent organization of journalists. It was established in the year 1914. The rest of the media institutions that are not directly connected to Washington, they depend on these news agencies for up-to-date reporting, video and audio.
The White House has changed the tradition that has been going on for more than a century. Now only the White House will decide which media house close to the President can reach and who is not.
White house will choose the press pool members daily
White House Press Secretary Caroline Lewitt said that now his team will choose the members of the press pool daily. Its purpose is to spread the message of President Trump to the right audience and keep expert journalists for every issue. Press Secretary Levit claimed that this would bring more variety in the press pool.
However, this decision of the White House is considered an attack on the freedom of the press. Opponents of the verdict say that this step weakens independent journalism. A Reuters spokesperson said, “Our news reaches billions of people every day. This step of the government endangers the rights of the people in which it should get independent and accurate information.”
There was a dispute over Gulf of America
The first dispute between the White House and the Press began in February 2025, when the news agency AP was dropped from the press pool by the White House. This happened because this media house refused to call the Gulf of Mexico a ‘Gulf of America’.
After being dropped from the press pool, AP filed a case against the Trump government. Last week, the Federal Judge has ruled in favor of the news agency. The judge said that the Trump administration took revenge action against the news agency. This is a violation of the freedom of the press in the US Constitution. The judge then ordered AP to be re -included in the press events to be held in the Oval Office and Air Force One.

Gulf of Mexico is often called the ‘third coast’ of the US, as it is adjacent to 5 states of America. Trump has changed its name to Gulf of Mexico after taking oath again.
The White House has dropped the news agency AP as well as Reuters and Bloomberg out of the press pool. This does not mean that he will not be able to cover President Trump. Now these news agencies will join rotation with 30 other print media outlets. Being in rotation, his direct reach to the President’s activities will be reduced.
News agency AP spokesman Lauren Easton described it as a ‘serious loss’ to the American public. Reuters said that they would continue to work for independent and fair journalism.
