League shield champion Mohun Bagan Super Giant will start its playoff campaign with an eye on the double crown when it meets Jamshedpur FC in the first leg of the second semifinal of the ISL at the JRD Tata Sports Complex on Thursday.
Mohun Bagan returns to action after a prolonged break of almost a month since it lifted the league title with a 2-0 win over FC Goa on March 8. This may put the Mariners at a slight disadvantage against JFC, which is high on enthusiasm after gaining a confidence-boosting win against a strong NorthEast United FC in the one-legged eliminator barely three days ago.
Looking at its recent form, Mohun Bagan will be counted as the favourite as Jamshedpur has not been able to secure a win in the last six meetings against the Kolkata team.
JFC head coach Khalid Jamil hoped that his team will stay positive after the win against NEU FC and secure the initial advantage against Mohun Bagan.
“There are two legs to play and we are facing a very good team. Since we are playing at home, we must think for a positive result,” Jamil said.
Bagan head coach Jose Molina said his team is eager to win the cup and will be looking for a win. “We are absolutely happy with the season, but we want to win the ISL cup too and we are ready for it,” he said.
