In the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on 19 February, Pakistan once again tried to raise the Kashmir issue. However, apart from India, countries like America, Iran, Britain, Germany and France criticized Pakistan and described it as the center of global terrorism.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif raised the issue of Jammu and Kashmir in a speech of more than 20 minutes in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly and demanded the withdrawal of the decision to remove Article 370 from India. India reacted strongly to this.
India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, called Pakistan a “center of global terrorism” and said that Pakistan is involved in cross-border terrorism and is spreading wrong information about Jammu and Kashmir.
International community response
The international community did not support Pakistan’s attempt to raise the Kashmir issue. Countries like America, Iran, Germany and France accused Pakistan of supporting terrorist groups and endangering regional stability. In a report by Brookings Institution in 2008, Pakistan was described as a sponsor of the world’s most active terrorist groups, except Iran. In 2018, former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif revealed that the Pakistani government played a role in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. In 2019, the then Prime Minister Imran Khan admitted that 30,000-40,000 terrorists are active in Pakistan.
Pakistan’s international separation status
Pakistan is facing international separation due to allegations of support of terrorism.
* In 2016, the SAARC summit was canceled after the boycott of India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Bhutan.
* Pakistan was put on the gray list of FATF, which made it difficult to get help from international financial institutions.
* America accused Pakistan of adopting double standards over terrorism and ended military assistance during Trump administration.
* Former British Prime Minister David Cameron accused Pakistan of promoting terrorism in 2010.
Afghanistan and Pakistan deteriorating relations
After the Taliban came to power, the relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan has become complicated. Pakistan first supported the Taliban, but now it is facing challenges from the Taliban ruled Afghanistan itself.
* Pakistan accused Afghanistan of sheltering terrorists over Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) attacks.
* Taliban has dismissed Pakistan’s allegations.
* India has continued humanitarian aid in Afghanistan, while Pakistan is in a dilemma about its diplomatic relations with Taliban.
conclusion
Despite repeated raising the Kashmir issue in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Pakistan is not getting global support. Instead, countries like America, Britain, France, Germany and Iran have described it as the center of terrorism. India has made it clear that Jammu and Kashmir is its integral part and the issue of removing Article 370 is completely internal matter of India.
Pakistan will have to change its foreign policy, otherwise it may have to face more serious consequences. Pakistan is putting its future in danger by promoting terrorism. If he wants to improve his global credibility, he will have to break ties with terrorism and behave like a responsible nation.
