According to the report of the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) team of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, 40 percent of the world’s population is not getting the facility to get education in the language that they speak or understand. In some low and medium -income countries, this figure has reached 90 percent. In this report, the need for multilingual policies in the field of education has been emphasized.

According to various reports, the issue of language in India has been affecting the education system. Here, due to the medium of education being English or Hindi, many regional language students have to face the difficulties of understanding. Many teachers do not get training to teach in mother tongue. Regional language does not have enough textual materials available. Some parents give priority to English, which gives less support to education in mother tongue. The problem of education has increased due to increasing number of students of various linguistic backgrounds in cities.

What did UNESCO say
UNESCO suggested that all countries should implement multilingual education policies so that every learner gets equal opportunities. For this, special training of teachers, improvement in curriculum and need to adopt sensitive policy towards languages ​​have been stated.

Report released on International Mother Language Day
This report was published on the occasion of 25th International Mother Language Day in which emphasis has been laid on language conservation and its promotion. The report said that more than 3.1 crore displaced youth are being deprived of education due to language obstacles.
