In a surprise move, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a three-day ceasefire with Ukraine to mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II. According to the Kremlin, the ceasefire will run around May 9 – Russia’s “Victory Day” – when global leaders, including China’s Xi Jinping, are expected to attend celebrations in Moscow. The Kremlin insisted that all military operations would pause and urged Ukraine to follow suit.
