Our Pinzon Island Snorkeling Tour With Galatrails Travel Service
One of the things my wife and I love to do when visiting tropical destinations is to always try to take a snorkeling and/or scuba diving tour.
On our visit to the {Galapagos Islands} we did just that, booking a full day …
🌺 Pinzon Island Snorkeling Tour 🌺
with Galatrails Travel Service.
After reviewing Galatrails website and reading all the positive reviews on the internet, I contacted the owner and founder; Juan Elaje. He was excellent to deal with, while still in the planning stages of our Galapagos Islands adventures, back home in Canada.
He recommended {Pinzon Island} for snorkeling while visiting, and spending time on the 🏝 Island of Santa Cruz.
He said it was one of the highest rated snorkeling locations in this part of the Galapagos.
Were we glad he did!
Pinzon Island – Location
Pinzon Island is the twelfth largest Galapagos island and is also known as; Duncan Island.
This island is actually considered to be the {geographical center point} of the islands.
“The island is located in the archipelago’s geographic center and has several notable geological characteristics.”
On one side of this uninhabited island, you will find sheer rock formations. Traveling to the otherside, there’s a lovely bay with small sandy beaches.
As luck has it, the island still remains fairly unpopular, receiving much fewer visitors than other islands in the archipelago’s central islands.
The island is only 7 square miles/ 18 kilometers in total size and with its highest elevation at 1502 feet/458 meters.
Our Pinzon Island Snorkeling Day Tour
The day before our tour, Juan had arranged for one of his guides to escort us to a local dive shop to be fitted for wetsuits.
This time of year {December}, the waters are still cold, with the {Humboldt Current} from Antarctica flowing through from; June throughout the end of November.
Full body wetsuits are recommended at this time of year and we were very glad we had them. The water was very cold, but made for some incredible marine life viewing.
Pinzon Island Small Group Snorkeling Tour
Due to strict regulations on the amount of people visiting the islands at one time, our group was just 9 people on our boat, with a crew of 3.
As well, we were the only boat at the island during our allotted time for snorkeling, which was outstanding!
Our day started at about 8 am, taking about 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach our first snorkeling destination. Our guide called this stop our practice swim.
The water was calm, shallow and we had the opportunity to snorkel among huge numbers of sea turtles.
What a great way to start our day’s adventure!
Pinzon Island
It was then on to {Pinzon Island}, for our incredible snorkeling adventure that was awaiting our arrival.
Accompanied by our superb and very professional guide, he led us throughout the bay snorkeling among; white tip sharks, sea turtles, sea lions and huge amounts of colorful tropical fish.
My wife and I have snorkeled in many parts of the world over the years, but nothing compared to the vast variety of marine life we experienced at Pinzon Island.
Even though the water was very cold, it was definitely worth this amazing experience!
After having at least 1 hour to enjoy the water, it was time to head back on board to warm up and enjoy a nice lunch prepared by the crew.
Fresh Galapagos Islands fish, rice and salad. An excellent meal after returning from the frigid water!
Roca Sin Nombre {Nameless Rock}
As we made our way back to Puerto Ayora, we stopped at “Roca Sin Nombre.”
This is a very tiny island sitting in the ocean all by itself. Sea lions and a variety of birds make their home on this tiny bit of land.
It was also time to try to catch the next day’s catch. The crew put out the rods and allowed everyone to give fishing a try.
We didn’t catch any fish, but we did snag a sea turtle. It was incredible to watch the crew reel this very strong turtle in towards the boat.
Once it was tired enough, they were able to remove the hook and release the turtle back to the sea.
We had a wonderful day’s adventure out to Pinzon Island. The crew and our guide were very professional, with attention to; safety, as they’re first priority.
Galatrails was a great choice for booking this and 2 other tours on mainland Ecuador. This travel booking agency is very reliable, easy to communicate with and has a superb website to view.
I would definitely recommend Juan and {Galatrails} for booking your tours in this part of Ecuador. For more detailed information on all their tours offered, contact and with an online chat access, I have listed the business’s website link below.
