Pakistan Protests Across Sindh Against Canal Constructions on Indus River Pakistan

Pakistan News: Opposition to the construction of new canals on the Indus River in Sindh province of Pakistan is increasing. People’s anger against these projects is increasing. The National Trade Union Federation Pakistan (NTUF) and youth organization on Friday (14 March 2025) organized the Indus River at the Press Club in Karachi: A seminar was organized under the title threat of Sindh.

Why protesting protesters?

According to local media reports, speakers at the seminar highlighted ecological and socio-economic challenges generated by erosion of the Indus River. At the same time, political and human rights activists as well as a large number of fishermen participated in the rally of Pakistan Fisharfok Forum against the Cholistan project and other canals on the Indus River. The protesters demanded that there were no canals, no dams nor cuts on the Indus river.

According to the report by Pakistan’s leading newspaper The Express Tribune, the protests and rallies organized across the province saw unusual widespread participation of people. People landing on the road were demanding to end the project for construction of six more canals on the Indus River.

President Zardari is protesting

Earlier this week, the speech of Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari in a joint session of Parliament on the construction of six new canals was dismissed by the Indus River Save Movement (SIRM) and announced the provincewide protest against unconstitutional projects.

Criticizing President Zardari for alleged approval of canal projects, SIRM leaders have demanded in a press conference that Pakistan will be out of the Federal Government. SIRM convenor Syed Jain Shah warned that these projects will destroy the agriculture of Sindh, cities will face serious water crisis, the drying up of the Indus River will destroy the ecosystem and the underground water resources will be eliminated, only the corporate will benefit.

There was a protest last month too

SIRM convenor Syed Jain Shah dismissed President Zardari’s statement on canal projects and demanded that instead of making vague statements, the President should cancel the notification to approve the new canals. Earlier in February, Sindh’s nationalist parties organized protests in various parts of the province and blocked the highways in protest against the construction of canals.
