A person has been arrested for killing a father and son during a violent protest in West Bengal violence affected Murshidabad. This is the fourth arrest in the case.

The arrested person has been identified as Ziaul Sheikh, a resident of Purbapara, a neighboring village of Zafarabad. The accused was absconding from 12 April. Sheikh was arrested by the West Bengal Police’s Special Work Force (STF) and Special Investigation Team (STI) from his hideout on Saturday.

According to the police, ‘This person is one of the main accused, who provoked the mob to vandalize the house of the deceased and killed Hargobindo Das and his son Chandan Das on 12 April.’

Police detected it from CCTV footage and Sheikh’s mobile phone location. Earlier, the police arrested two brothers Kalu Nadar and Dildar as well as another accused Inzamul Haq.

Governor provided phone number to victims

On 17 April, the Calcutta High Court reserved orders to continue the deployment of central forces in the violence affected Murshidabad district. The High Court suggested that a panel with one member of the National Human Rights Commission, West Bengal State Human Rights Commission and the State Legal Services Authority should visit the violence affected areas.

After which West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose visited Murshidabad on 19 April. The governor also met the family of people who lost their lives in violence. He provided phone numbers to the victims so that people would feel free to talk to them directly.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) also reached Murshidabad. NCW President Vijaya Rahatkar reached Kolkata on Thursday. After meeting the father-son family killed during the violence on 11 April, Vijaya Rahatkar said, ‘These people are in so much pain that I am not able to speak yet. I do not have words to express their pain. ‘

The court warned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Trinamool Congress (TMC) and all other parties not to make any inflammatory statements. The court said, “Please do not give any inflammatory speech. The state police also formed an 11 -member SIT under the leadership of DIG Syed Waqar Raza of Murshidabad. Which will investigate cases of this and other violence in the district. So far 278 people have been arrested across the district in connection with the riots.
