Delhi University is going to withdraw the proposal to add Manusmriti and Babarnama to its undergraduate history syllabus. The university has taken this decision due to heavy opposition from teachers.
Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh said that he has stopped this proposal using his emergency powers so that it does not appear before the Academic Council i.e. AC.
The proposal to add both these subjects to the syllabus was taken by the History Department Joint Committee of the University on 19 February. It was to be presented to the Academic Council and Executive Council for reviews. Yogesh Singh said that no topic will be added to the syllabus that produces divide in the society.
Faculty had opposed proposal
This decision of the university was opposed by faculty. Associate Professor Surendra Kumar wrote a letter to VC for reconsideration on this decision. He wrote that Manusmriti promotes caste -based discrimination and harassment, which is against the right to equality of the Indian Constitution.
He also said that Babarnama, which has stories of Mughal emperor Babur, glorifies the invader who looted the whole country.
While the faculty was opposing this decision, many teachers said that knowing the correct history is necessary for students. His argument was that we should see what is the historical importance of such books, not what will be their impact on the society.
Last year also came to the proposal to teach Manusmriti
This proposal of teaching Manusmriti in DU is not the first. Last year too, a proposal was made to add Manusmriti to the syllabus of law, which was withdrawn after the protest.
