Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) was established in 1920 in Aligarh, and emerged as an important part of India’s freedom struggle. Inspired by the non -cooperation movement of Mahatma Gandhi, some nationalist Muslim academics laid the foundation of this institute. Initially it was located in Aligarh, but in 1925 it was shifted to Okhla area of Delhi. Jamia Milia Islamia was successful in achieving the status of Central University in 1988, and today it has become one of the major educational institutions of the country.
