Japan wildfire: Thousands of people have been evacuated after fierce forest fire erupted in some parts of northern Japan. This forest fire has been considered to be the biggest in Japan in the last 30 years, affecting the area of 1,800 hectares and killed at least one person.
According to officials, around 2,000 people have gone to friends and relatives from areas around the city of Offunato, Northern Japan, while more than 1,200 people took refuge in shelter sites. According to the disaster management agency spokesperson, “This fire is the largest after the fire in Kushiro, Hokkaido in 1992.”
Efforts continue to control the fire
Military helicopters are constantly trying to extinguish this fire that has been going on for four days, but so far more than 80 buildings have been damaged by the fire. More than 1,700 firefighters have been deployed from across the country. The air footage issued by NHK can be seen rising smoke from the fire.
In 2023, there was an increase in forest fire
According to government data, there was a decline in wildfire incidents in Japan since the peak of the 1970s. However, in 2023, about 1,300 wildfires were enraged across Japan, which increased mainly due to strong winds and dry climate during February to April.

Natural cause
The forests have two major natural elements for fire: oxygen and temperature. Oxygen and dry wood are easily available in the forests, which work as fuel for fire. Due to excess heat or lightning, the chances of wildfire increases. This fire becomes difficult to control, especially when strong winds move. In such circumstances, even a small spark can turn into a fierce fire.
Unnatural cause
Incidents of fire in forests are also increasing due to human activities. In recent years, humans have increased entry into the forests, whether it is camping, picnic or other activities. During these activities, people cook, smoke, and sometimes leave the fire carelessly. This increases the chances of fire in the forests.
