Indian scholar and litterateur Gayatri Chakraborty Spivak was awarded the Halberg Award 2025. The award has been received for his research and contribution to comparative literature, translation, postcolonial study, political philosophy and feminist theory.

Gayatri Chakraborty Spivak is a famous Indian scholar, literature theorist ie literary theorist and Feminist Thinker. He has written more than 10 books and has edited or translated many other books. His research has been translated into more than 20 languages and has given lectures in more than 50 countries.

Gayatri will be given this Halberg Award on 5 June 2025 at the University of Bergn, Norway.

- In other Worlds: Essays in Cultural Politics (1987) – This book is a collection of his early articles on literature, culture and politics.
- Can the subaltern speake? (1988) – It highlights the sound of exploited classes, oppressed groups (subaltern) and the difficulties of presenting their ideas in the colonies.
- The Post-Colonial Critic: Interviews, Strategies, Dialogues (1990)-This book has compiled all his interviews, articles and his thoughts on postkolonial studies.
- Outside in the Teaching Machine (1993) – In this, he has told the relationship of education, literature and political theries.
- A Critique of Postcolonial reason: Toward a history of the Vanishing Present (1999) – This is one of his most famous books, in which he has criticized the views of Western philosophers and discussed the effects of colonialism.
- Death of a Discipline (2003) – In this he has analyzed the changing nature of comparative literature and its global effects.
- Other Asias (2008) – This book focuses on Asian Society, their cultural differences and Western influences.
- An Aesthetic Education in the Era of Globalization (2012) – In this book, he has discussed the relationship of Esthetics and Education in the era of globalization.
- Readings (2014) – In this, he has done a thorough analysis of literary principles and contemporary ideas.
- Nationalism and the Imagination (2015) – In this book, he has investigated the relationship between nationalism, identity and cultural politics.
At the same time, she translated the book ‘Of Grammatology’ by German philosopher Jacques Derrida, which led to her discussion in the academic world.

Gayatri also translated the works of Bengali literature, such as Mahashweta Devi.
Gayatri Chakraborty has been honored with Padma Bhushan
- In 2012, Kyoto Prize was awarded for art and philosophy.
- In 2013, the Government of India honored him with the country’s third highest civilian honor ‘Padma Bhushan’.
- In 2025, he was also awarded the prestigious Halberg award.
Humanities and Social Sciences found Halberg Prize
The Halberg Award is an international honor, which is given to scholars that contribute extraordinary in the fields of humanities, social sciences, laws and theology. The award was launched by the Norway Parliament in 2003.

The Halberg Award is considered as prestigious as the Nobel Prize, but is given in the field of humanities and social sciences rather than science.
Foreign and historian Ludwig Halberg award
The award is named after Ludvig Holberg, a famous Norwegian-Denish philosopher, historian and writer. The Halberg Award winner is provided with an amount of 6.5 million Norwegian Chronor (about 6 crore Indian rupees).
