After the Pahalgam terror attack, the Government of India decided to postpone the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan. Late Thursday, India was sent a letter to Pakistan and given official information.
Water Power Minister Secretary Debashree Mukherjee in India has written a letter to Murtaza, Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources. It said that this treaty was done in good context but cannot be maintained without good relationships.
On April 22, 26 tourists were killed by terrorists in Basaron Valley near Pahalgam. These included a Nepali citizen. More than 10 people were injured. After which India took 5 major decisions including postponement of water treaty.

- Notice is being sent by the Government of India to the Government of Pakistan. In which Article XII (3) of the treaty has been sought to amend the Indus Water Treaty 1960. This letter cites issues that require the agreement to be rectified again.
- Since the treaty, there has been a lot of change in the population till now. In such a situation, some changes are necessary to speed up clean energy development.
- In any agreement, it is most important to respect that treaty. Instead, terrorism continues by targeting the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir on behalf of Pakistan.
- Safety uncertainties have disrupted India’s rights under the treaty. Apart from this, Pakistan did not give any reaction on India’s request. Thus he has violated the treaty.
- Therefore, the Government of India has decided that the Indus Water Treaty 1960 is postponed with immediate effect.
Indus Water Agreement was held in 1960, stopped after 65 years In 1960, the agreement was reached between Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan President Ayub Khan. In the agreement, 6 rivers flowing from the Indus basin were divided into the eastern and western parts.
India has full authority over the water of Ravi, Beas and Sutlej. India can stop India’s 20% water of Indus, Chenab and Jhelum rivers in the western part.

On April 23, 5 major decisions were taken in the Cabinet Meeting (CCS) of security affairs under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Several officers including Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, NSA Ajit Doval were present in it.

Pakistan said- Act of war will be stopped if Indus stops water The National Security Committee (NCS) held a meeting on 24 April in Islamabad. In this, Pakistan postponed all bilateral agreements between the two countries. It also includes the 1972 Shimla agreement.
Pakistan said that if India stops the Indus Water Agreement, it will be considered like the Act of War. Pakistan said, “Any danger for Pakistan’s sovereignty and security will be strongly responded in all areas. We condemn any terrorist activity.
According to Pakistani newspaper Dawn, NCS meeting said that the Waqf Bill was forcibly passed in India, it is an attempt to marginalize Muslims.
