Today, on February 28, National Science Day is being celebrated across the country. This day is celebrated to celebrate the work of Bharat Ratna and Nobel Prize winner scientist and physicist Chandrashekhar Venkataraman i.e. CV Raman.
This year the theme of Science Day is ‘Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for Developed India’.
On this day i.e. on 28 February 1928, CV Raman announced the discovery of Raman Effect. For this, he also received the Nobel Prize in the year 1930. In 1986, the Indian government decided to celebrate this day as Science Day.

Prize winning idea returning from traveling abroad
In 1921, CV was working as a professor at Raman University of Calcutta. Meanwhile, the university sent him to participate in the International Universities Congress to be held in London.
When he was returning from the plane after staying in London for 15 days, he was very impressed to see the Maditrenian C spread far away from the sky. Raman found that the reason for the water to be blue is that the water scatters the blue color of all the colors of the light. This is also the reason for the sky being blue.
From here, CV started thinking about Raman Lite being scattered and started research on it. He passed the light with a variety of objects and saw how the light is scattered when the light passes from different objects. The result of this hard work has been that he discovered Raman Effect or Raman scattering on 28 February 1928.

Use of Raman Effect-
- Skin, breast and brain tumors are identified.
- Pollution and climate change is identified.
- The quality of drugs is done in control.
- Other planets like mars are in studying.
Nobel became the first Asian to win Prize
In 1930, CV Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize of Physics. He was the first Asian to achieve this feat.
Raman’s name was nominated by Lord Rutherford for the Nobel Prize. These are the same Rutherford called Father of Nuclear Physics. Rutherford’s experiments are often mentioned in NCERT books.
