The race for the I-League title is still open. Gokulam Kerala kept its hopes alive with a 1-0 victory against Sreenidi Deccan at the Corporation Stadium on Sunday night.
The win has taken Gokulam to the second spot in the table, with 37 points, just two behind the leader Churchill Brothers. Inter Kashi and Real Kashmir are on 36 points. The final round of matches in the league, to be played over the next one week, should be fascinating.
In a match they desperately needed to win, the Gokulam men showed intent. They won a corner-kick in the opening seconds, but a couple of minutes later, Sreenidi, too, earned one. That was indeed a lively start to the match, played in front of a smattering of spectators, despite entry being free.
Gokulam broke through in the 15th minute. And the scorer was once again Thabiso Brown. The striker from Lesotho, a small country in southern Africa, has been in sparkling form since joining the club last month.
But Sreenidi left him unmarked, making it easier for him to strike, after he was given a long ball. He put it easily past the hapless goalkeeper Aryan Lamba’s legs.
The result: Gokulam Kerala 1 (Thabiso Brown 15) bt Sreenidi Deccan 0.
