Today, a petition will be heard in the Delhi High Court seeking to change the name of the country from English to India or Hindustan. In the last hearing held on 17 February, Justice Sachin Dutta extended the time given to the Center to file a reply.
The court gave time to the Center’s counsel to seek instructions from the ministry at the hearing of 4 February. Delhi resident petitioner Namah has demanded amendment to Article 1 of the Constitution. He says that in the Constitution, the ‘India Joe India Hai’ line should be changed to ‘Union of India or the states of India’.

Supreme Court has given instructions to ministry Namah has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court earlier. In the petition, he demanded recognition of India’s original and authentic name of India. On this, the Supreme Court had directed the concerned ministry to take cognizance of the matter in 2020, but no action was taken by the ministry.
In 1948, the name of India was also opposed in the Constituent Assembly. The petitioner says that the British used to call slaves as Indians. He named India in English. On 15 November 1948, while arguing the draft of Article 1 of the Constitution, M. Anantashyanam Iyengar and Seth Govind Das strongly opposed the name of the country to name India in English.
He also suggested to name India, India, India or Hindustan in English in place of India. At that time it was not taken care of. Now the court should direct the Central Government to rectify this mistake.
