The Supreme Court will hear the petitions of the Gujarat government and the culprits in the 2002 Godhra case case on 6 and 7 May. Justice J.K. The bench of Maheshwari and Justice Rajesh Bindal gave this information on Thursday.
The bench reported that it would start the final hearing on May 6 and 7. The entire hearing will take at least two weeks. The hearing will be held throughout the day on 6 and 7 May. During this time, no other case will be heard until the court is specially said.
The bench has directed the lawyer Sanjay Hegde to submit his arguments to the court by May 3, appearing for one of the culprits. The list of allegations against the convict in the argument is to give details of the decisions of the lower courts.
On 27 February 2002, the S-6 compartment of Sabarmati Express was set on fire at Godhra station in Gujarat. 59 pilgrims returning from Ayodhya in the train were killed. The Gujarat government has challenged the High Court’s decision to convert the death sentence of 11 convicts in this case into life imprisonment.

The Gujarat High Court has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court challenging the verdict. The Gujarat government said in February 2023 that it would demand the death penalty for the 11 convicts whose sentence was converted into life imprisonment by the High Court. On the other hand, many convicts have challenged the decision to keep him guilty in the case.

The Commission introduced the second part of its report in December 2019. In this too, the matter said in the first part of the report was repeated.
