Former ISRO Chief Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan died in Bengaluru on Friday. He was 84 years old. His body will be kept for the last darshan on Sunday, 27 April at the Raman Research Institute. He had a minor heart attack 2 years ago. Kasturirangan was ill since then.
He was currently working as Chancellor of Central University of Rajasthan and NIIT University.
Kasturirangan was born in Kochi
On 24 October 1940, Kasturirangan was born in Ernakulam, Kingdon of Kochi. His family was from Tamil Nadu who later settled in Kerala. Kasturirangan did his early studies from Shri Rama Verma High School.
After this, he graduated in Science from Ram Narayan Ruia College in Mumbai and earned a Master of Science degree in Physics from University of Mumbai. Kasturirangan earned a doctoral degree in High Energy Astronomy in 1971. After this, he married Lakshmi soon after finishing PHD in 1969.
Rajesh and Sanjay- Kasturirangan have two sons. His wife Lakshmi died in 1991.

He was the chairman of ISRO for 9 years
K Kasturirangan held the post of chairman of ISRO for 9 years. Along with this, he has also been the Secretary of the Government of India and the Chairman of the Space Commission for the Department of Science.
He worked as the director of ISRO Satellite Center. During this time he worked on INSAT-2, India’s remote sensing satellites, scientific satellites. The directors of Bhaskar 1 and 2 projects were also Kasturirangan. Bhaskar 1 and 2 are India’s first meaning observation satellites.
Apart from this, he played an important role in the development of PSLV and GSLV. These are both launch vehicles. Kasturiranjan started research to send missions to search on other planets. Due to his efforts, India was able to send Chandrayaan-1 mission.

Education sector also contributed
Kasturirangan was the chairman of the drafting committee of National Education Polysi 2020. In September 2021, he was also made the chairman of a 12 -member committee formed for the National Karikulam Framework. This committee was given three years after which their suggestions will now be included in the school books. He has also been a member of the Board of Trustees of Raman Research Institute, Bengaluru.
Nambi Narayanan was Kasturirangan
In 1994, Nambi Narayanan, a scientist from ISRO, was accused of selling India’s rocket technology to Pakistan. It has also been made a film called Rocketry- The Nambi Effect. K. Kasturirangan was not directly associated with the matter but Nambi was the senior of Narayanan.
But Kasturirangan stayed away from this whole matter. Later, Kasturirangan was accused of deliberately on silence and not supporting Nambi Narayanan.
