Earthquake in turkey: A 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred on Wednesday (23 April 2025) in Istanbul of Turki. Its center was in Marmara Sagar near Istanbul. Turkish AFAD Disaster Agency said that it is one of the most powerful earthquakes that occurred in this city in recent years. The United States Geological Survey confirmed the intensity of the earthquake and stated that it came at a 10 km shallow depth.
Thousands of buildings were evacuated
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the Marmara Sea, about 40 km southwest of Istanbul. According to media reports, thousands of buildings have been evacuated. The effect of this earthquake was also felt in neighboring countries like Bulgaria, Greece and Romania. The tremor of the earthquake caused chaos all around, people came in panic.
The tremors of the earthquake were so strong that the buildings started shaking. People came on the streets screaming and started running around. At present, the news of any loss of life has not been revealed. This was followed by many shocks, one of which was 5.3. The disaster and emergency management agency appealed to the people to stay away from buildings.
In a post on social media platform X, Turki’s internal minister Ali Yralikaya said, “A 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Cylivory of Istanbul’s Marmara Sagar. FAD and all the teams of our respective institutions started field scans about the earthquake, which was also felt in the surrounding provinces. Allah saved our country and our nation.”
The Turkas are highly sensitive to the earthquake due to many major tectonic plates being located at the intersection. The country is located with two important fault lines – Northern Anatolian Fault and Eastern Anatolian Fault, which leads to a frequent and serious risk. Recently, on February 6, 2023, a huge earthquake of 7.8 magnitude and its powerful shocks destroyed the southern Turke. More than 53,000 people were killed and people died in northern Syria.
