Delhi University (DU) has repeatedly sought guidance from the University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding the second term of the Principal of St. Stephens College. DU says that the re -appointment of the principal, which the college has justified as a minority institution, violates the rules of UGC and university.

Principal Professor John Varghese continued his second term without his first term (2016-2021) without necessary permission. The DU did not accept this decision, which led to a dispute in the college administration. DU sent a letter to the UGC on 15 November 2022, 21 February 2023, 20 September 2023, 9 November 2023, 20 November 2023 and 12 February 2024, demanding clarification on the issue, but no clear response has been received so far. DU gave Prof. to resolve this dispute. A four -member committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of Anil Aneja.
