The Central Board of Film Certification has banned the release of British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri’s film ‘Santosh’ in India. The film was sent to the Oscar from the UK and the film was also a shortlist. The board says that the film shows violence against women related issues, Islamophobia and India Police Force. The film also shows issues like caste discrimination and sexual violence. The board has asked to cut several scenes of the film.
Shahana Goswami said, the film may not be released in theaters of India
The film’s actress Shahana Goswami told in a conversation with Indian Today, ‘The censor has given a list of some necessary changes to release the film. But our entire team does not agree with that because the boards are trying to make more changes in the film. So this film will probably not be released in theaters of India.
Shahana Goswami said- it’s sad
On stopping the release of the film, Shahana Goswami further said, “It is very sad that the film which got the sensor approval at the script level, is required to release so many cuts and changes to release in India.”
The film was shown at the premiere of Cannes Film Festival
The film was first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. There was also a lot of praise for the film. Not only this, it was nominated for the best debut feature in BAFTA. Shahana Goswami also received the Best Actress Award at the Asian Film Awards.

Apart from the actress, the film’s writer and director Sandhya Suri has also talked about the decision of the censor board. He has described the board’s decision as quite disappointing. Sandhya Suri said, “It was quite surprising for all of us because I did not think that the issues shown in the film are new to Indian cinema or have not been raised before in other films.”
