Deven Bharti was congratulated by other colleagues of the police team as soon as he became the commissioner of Mumbai.
Deven Bharti, an IPS officer from Darbhanga, Bihar, has been made the new Police Commissioner of Mumbai. He will replace the current commissioner Vivek Phansalkar. After 35 years of job, Phansalkar is retiring today i.e. Wednesday.

Deven Bharti is a 1994 batch IPS officer. Prior to this, he has been a Special Police Commissioner in Mumbai’s Law and Order. He is considered close to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Deven will hold office this evening.
The 26/11 was involved in the investigation of the attack
From 2014 to 2019, Bharti was holding the post of Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order) during Fadnavis’ tenure.
Bharti was involved in the investigation of the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai. He played an important role in hanging Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab.

There were many names in the commissioner’s race
After Vivek Phansalkar retired, there was a discussion about who would get the post. Senior police officers Sadanand Date, Sanjay Kumar Verma, Ritesh Kumar and women police officer Archana Tyagi were also in the race of Police Commissioner.
During the tenure of Fadnavis government between 2014 and 2019, Deven was posted in several important positions. He was also posted as SP in Gadchiroli and later served as SP services in several districts of Maharashtra including Amravati and Akola.

He was also served in the intelligence department between 1998 and 2003. In a 29 -year career, Bharti was mostly posted in Mumbai city. During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he was transferred to the Joint Commissioner Economic Offenses Branch for a few months and was later appointed as the ATS chief of the Maharashtra Police.
